Terraces run into ruins in Pisac

Travelers seeking adventure will find the fertile soils of the Sacred Valley town of Pisac an intoxicating setting for active endeavors on Peru tours.

With its cool climate, exploring the valley will allow visitors to better understand Peru's intricate agricultural traditions. Travelers can traverse the local terraced fields, the uneven “floors” of which help control the environment for the crops.

Famed for its thrice-weekly market and its extraordinary ruins, Pisac retains old-world charm. Travelers from throughout the region flock to the town’s market, where they can sample the area’s fresh fruits and vegetables, admire the craftsmanship of local potters, and even pick up their own Peruvian woolen.

The ruins, which are touted by experts as having better craftsmanship than Machu Picchu, sit above the town on a high bluff. One of the most impressive features of the site is the astronomy observatory, which was used by priests to calculate the growing season. The Pisac ruins also include the largest Incan graveyard in the world, featuring elevated tombs.

With many accommodations to choose from, some combine the ancient relics and modernized offerings. Paz y Luz doubles as a relaxing spa and spiritual center. Providing such services as massages and Andean healing workshops, the comfortable rooms also offer excellent views of the Pisac ruins.
