Enrich a Machu Picchu adventure by visiting secret spots

The Incan ruins of Machu Picchu, nestled high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, are one of the world's iconic destinations. Almost anyone on Peru adventure tours will be eager to make the trip to the site, more than 7,800 feet above sea level. But adventurers might keep in mind that the main ruins are not the only attraction in the area, and Machu Picchu excursions can be enhanced by adding some off-the-beaten-path destinations to an itinerary.

Part of Machu Picchu's allure is that it remains cloaked in mystery, with experts still unsure why the Incas built the city and what it was used for. Adding to its enigmatic atmosphere, visitors will find there is very little explanation of the ruins on-site. Those avid for more information might visit the Museo de Sitio Manual Chavez Ballon. National Geographic referred to this as a "hidden museum" at the base of the mountain that not many people visit, despite its excellent exhibits.

Each day, the first 400 people who sign up can climb Huanya Picchu, a peak opposite the ruins. Access to Huanya Picchu affords adventurers an often overlooked opportunity to climb even higher, to the top of Machu Picchu Mountain, which offers spectacular views of the ruins and its surroundings.

Another secret is the Temple of the Moon, reached via a winding trail from the main Huanya Picchu viewing area. This cavernous shrine might once have been a burial place for mummies and features elaborate stonework.
