The Shubenacadie tidal bore gives rafters a wild ride. Mud sliding on the Shubenacadie

The Shubenacadie River in Nova Scotia offers adventure travelers on Canada tours one of the world's most unique river rafting experiences in a spectacular natural setting.

The Canadian Province of Nova Scotia juts out into the Atlantic Ocean north of Maine and is separated from the mainland by the narrow Bay of Fundy. The bay experiences some of the most radical tidal shifts in the world, with water rising nearly 50 feet on some days. As the tide rolls in, it builds up a powerful current called a tidal bore, which flows powerfully into the Shubenacadie, creating raucous waves at the river's mouth and incredible rapids upstream. Travelers can experience the awesome force of the Fundy tidal bore by rafting the rush of water.

Rafting groups often start upstream at low tide, enjoying a journey toward the mouth of the river that might include mud sliding. When the tide recedes, the steep, muddy banks of the river are exposed and serve as the world's most extravagant natural Slip 'n Slide. The surrounding landscape, including soaring cliffs and evergreen forests, is also awe-inspiring.

While in Nova Scotia, nature enthusiasts can check out the bald eagles on the Bras D'Or coast. Those looking for cultural activities and dining options can head for Halifax, which boasts more than 300 restaurants, art galleries, a symphony and a casino.
