Witness an important part of Hinduism at the ghats of Varanasi
The river Ganges is a sacred destination for people of the Hindu faith, and travelers going on a tour of India can witness the relationship between devotees and the river when they visit the ghats of Varanasi.
The city of Varanasi is considered to be one of the most important cities in Hinduism, and many pilgrims come here to bathe themselves in the waters of the Ganges. This takes place most frequently at ghats, or staircases leading down into the river.
Each of Varanasi's many ghats has its own unique character, so travelers will want to see as many as they can to fully appreciate the religious experience. At Dasaswamedh, the largest ghat in the city, tourists can see countless worshippers dipping themselves into the Ganges, while visitors can snap photographs at the colorful steps of the ghat at Kedar.
Meanwhile, many Indians cremate the remains of deceased loved ones at Mainkarnika Ghat before spreading their ashes into the Ganges, as dying in Varanasi is thought to be auspicious among Hindus. Seeing a funeral here can be a truly moving cultural experience, although travelers should be sure to stay respectful by refraining from disturbing others or taking photographs.
