Tour one of India's most impressive forts on a Jodhpur jaunt

Located in the northwest province of Rajasthan, the city of Jodhpur is a rewarding destination for travelers on India tours, featuring bustling bazaars and the visually striking "Blue City" - a neighborhood of blue-painted ancient dwellings. However, the city's primary draw, and one of the most spectacular buildings in a country with no shortage of these, is the Mehrangarh Fort.

Built in the 15th century, the fort's 400-foot rock walls rise like a mountain above the Blue City. Among the many amazing rooms visitors can explore, the royal chamber and the Phool Mahal are standouts. The royal chamber features impressive mirrors, intricately carved and painted walls and stained glass windows. The Phool Mahal, or dancing hall, has a ceiling made of gold.

The fort also contains exhibits of royal cradles, thrones, miniature paintings, musical instruments, furniture, armor and more, making it one of "the most satisfying outings in Rajasthan," according to Frommer's. Both Frommer's and Lonely Planet recommend the fort's audioguide, which includes recordings of former rulers of Jodhpur.

On the other side of the city, the Umaid Bhawan Palace is a jaw-dropping sandstone building with a 105-foot-high cupola and lengthy colonnades. It is the residence of the current Maharaja and is also a luxury hotel of the first order, named hotel of the year by Conde Nast Traveler in 2009.
