See the Shore Temple of Mahabalipuram, India
Many travelers going on a tour of India visit the city of Mahabalipuram to experience its Hindu heritage. One important religious site that is famous for its unforgettable beauty is the famed Shore Temple.
First constructed between 700 and 728 A.D., the Shore Temple earned its name from its location. Perched on a promontory that juts out into the Bay of Bengal, this shrine combines religious and cultural heritage with spectacular views of the ocean, making it one of Mahabalipuram's most popular attractions.
Although many of the other religious destinations in Mahabalipuram are cut from monolithic pieces of stone, the Shore Temple is a five-story building constructed using structural techniques. Sitting on a platform measuring 50 feet on each side, the temple is 60 feet high, making it an imposing sight next to the vast horizon of the nearby sea.
In the temple, visitors will find three shrines. Two of the shrines - including the largest one - are dedicated to Shiva, while the last was made in honor of Vishnu. Other well-known features include several status of lions as well as intricate carvings on the temple's flanks.
