Explore Mughal history at the Red Fort in Delhi
The ochre towers and ornate decorations of the Red Fort in Delhi have led the structure to be deemed a masterpiece of Mughal architecture, making it a must-see attraction for travelers going on a tour of India.
The fort was built between 1638 and 1648 by Shah Jahan, a leader of the Mughal empire. Situated in the heart of the walled city of Old Delhi, the fortification served as the home of the imperial family for more than 200 years until the Mughal emperor was expelled from the country by the British.
In more modern times, the Red Ford has become a world-famous attraction due to its unique architectural heritage, even being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. The building's style draws on influences from Persian, European and Indian cultures, synthesizing a Shahjahani style all its own.
