Visit the stunning ruins of Petra in Jordan
Travelers going on a tour of Jordan won't want to miss Petra, an ancient archaeological site that has become one of the Middle Eastern country's top tourist attractions.
Visitors to Petra approach the ancient city through a narrow sandstone canyon known as the Siq. Once they emerge from the crevasse, they will see Petra's many breathtaking buildings, many of which are carved directly into the rose-red face of the surrounding cliffs.
The most famous attraction at Petra is the fabled Treasury, a towering structure built into a cliff. Sitting atop the Treasury is an urn, which legend says holds an ancient treasure placed there by an Egyptian pharaoh.
Hikers who visit Petra can take advantage of several different trails, each of which takes them to important archaeological sites. On a 2.5-hour round-trip hike, visitors can walk to the High Place of Sacrifice, a group of mountaintop altars where ancient priests made sacrifices. At the Mountain of Aaron, hikers can see the tomb of the brother of the prophet Moses.
A private tour of Petra offers several advantages over more conventional options. The biggest benefit of a private excursion is increased flexibility, as guides can focus on whatever sites and structures travelers are most interested in seeing and travellers are free to move at their own pace.
