Visit Jesus' childhood home on a Holy Land tour
Bethlehem is famous as the birthplace of Jesus, but according to the Bible he grew up in the town of Nazareth, in Galilee. Travelers on Israel tours who venture to modern-day Nazareth can visit many of the sites where, according to tradition, Christianity's Holy Family lived and worked.
The principal attraction in Nazareth is the Basilica of the Annunciation, constructed where Christians believe the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and announced she would be the mother of Jesus. The church is unique in that unlike most other Holy Land sites, it was constructed relatively recently - though houses of worship have occupied the site for centuries, the present basilica was completed in 1966. Inside, it has an international flavor and includes a Japanese mural depicting Mary and Jesus.
Close to the basilica, the Church of St. Joseph now stands where, according to tradition, Jesus' earthly father ran his carpentry shop. Another relatively modern church, the Basilica of Jesus the Adolescent was completed in 1918 and houses a sculpture of a teenage Jesus made by Bognio. Those who want a taste of what the town was like during Jesus' lifetime can visit Nazareth Village, where reenacters provide a sense of Biblical Nazareth.
Like other cities in Israel, Nazareth is an important location not just for Christians but for other religions. The population is majority Muslim, and the White Mosque and Arab markets contribute to the town's multicultural allure.
