Safeguarded Egypt in Edfu Horus Temple
Considered the most well-preserved Egyptian temple in the world, Edfu Horus Temple is a mecca of the country's ancient history, and a must-see spot on Egypt tours.
One of the first things that most travelers will notice about Edfu is the prolific inscriptions, thousands of which can be found on walls, columns, ceilings and even flagpole niches. The outer surface of one enclosure wall features a nearly 1,000-foot-long, horizontal band of text that tells the history of the temple and stretches the entire length of the wall. While most travelers will not be fluent in ancient Egyptian, several translations of the text are available and can be brought to temple for a deeper lesson on its past.
Ancient Egyptian scenes of piety and sacrifice are also prevalent throughout Edfu. The plyon features a large relief of King Neos Dionysos before the Gods, while the first court, surrounded by 32 pillars featuring stately palm-fronded capitals, depicts Ptolemy Soter II being judged by the Gods.
The temple, being rather large, can often be most enjoyed from above. Just beyond the plyon, visitors can climb to the temple’s top for panoramic views of its imposing pillars, sturdy walls and breathtaking vistas of the nearby Nile.
