Monuments and mosaics in Madaba

Travelers on a Jordan tour with an eye for color or a yearning for history should visit the dynamic city of Madaba, which is practically overflowing with both.

Being in proximity to many great sites, Madaba’s shining star is its plethora of Byzantine-era mosaics.

Unlike other countries, Madaba built its intricate mosaics on the floor, with artists taking months or years to painstakingly finish their huge creations. Travelers can visit these fine pieces of ancient artistry and craftsmanship in many older Madaba churches. Popular scenes include animals, humans in everyday activities and mythological gods. Travelers should also take notice of a mosaic's edges, which often feature some of the most intricate designs of the entire piece. For a good art stop and orientation to town, visitors should take in the mosaic map at St. George’s Church.

Madaba also provides one of the best central spots from which to see Jordan’s most well-known attractions. Travelers can get their hearts pumping along the hillsides of nearby Mount Nebo, go for a stroll along the banks of the Dead Sea, or visit the baptism site of Jesus at Bethany Beyond The Jordan.
