Find your own oasis in Bahariya
Often used as a jumping-off point for desert camping, the Bahariya Oasis a quiet, romantic destination sure to complement all Egypt tours.
Set against hills sculpted out of black quartz, the area’s palm groves, date and olive trees, and 10 hot springs create a sense of relaxation effortlessly. Renowned for its healing powers, the Bir Sigam hot spring is said to ease the pains of stiff joints and digestive issues.
Delightful shops and restaurants populate the area, with traditional food and wares vividly enriching any visitor’s experience with their pungent smells, tastes and textures. Locally-made rugs and scarves are like wearable art: hand-woven into intricate patterns in vivid colors, narrowing down which to buy is a major challenge. Visitors can dine upon kebabs and falafel, often served with the fresh fruit, olives and dates that are grown in the area’s fertile soil.
Egypt is never short on historical relics, and at Bahariya, history buffs can marvel at the Temple of Alexander the Great, ancient Christian churches and the Ptolemaic tombs, as well as a necropolis containing more than one hundred mummies.
