Explore Haifa during a tour of the Holy Land
Travelers on Israel tours are well-rewarded for venturing to the country's third-largest city of Haifa, a picturesque seaside metropolis in the shadow of Mount Carmel.
Like other Holy Land destinations, Haifa is home to sites with great religious significance. According to scripture, the prophet Elijah sheltered in a cave on Mount Carmel while threatened by King Ahab, and modern day travelers can still visit the site traditionally identified as his hiding place. It is a major destination for Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Druze Arab pilgrims.
Also on Mount Carmel, the Baha'i Gardens might be Haifa's most spectacular location. A series of beautifully manicured garden terraces ascend the side of the mountain, affording visitors amazing views of the sea, city, and sparkling golden dome of the Baha'i Shrine of the Bab below. The Baha'i faith reveres the prophet Baha'u'llah, who it says was the most recent in a long line of prophets including Moses, Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad.
Haifa is not just a destination for pilgrims but a bustling modern city, and travelers will find plenty of options for dining, shopping and recreation. Haifa's Grand Canyon Mall is the largest in Israel, featuring 150 shops and an indoor amusement park, while many beaches line the waterfront. Families traveling together will find play areas and pools for children at Dado Zamir beach.
