Essential Egypt in Luxor
Those wanting to see some of the country’s most impressive and famous relics will want to visit Luxor during Egypt tours.
The Nile’s east bank is home to some of the most popular temples, including the Luxor Temple. Travelers entering from the northeast will first see the Avenue of the Sphinxes, a series of statues that once ran from Luxor to the Karnak temples, almost three miles away. The temple itself is huge, with a plethora of rooms and passages that often mesmerize travelers. Visitors should be sure to check out the columned Great Court of Ramses II, whose south wall features reliefs and name plates of 17 of Ramses II’s sons.
Luxor also houses the Sun Court of Amenhotep II, as well as a triple-terraced shrine built by Hatshepsut.
The Luxor Museum owns an impressive display of ancient relics, brilliantly well-kept. One of the highlights of this museum is the royal mummies, an exhibit which displays the unwrapped, mummified bodies of Ahmose I, 18th Dynasty founder, as well as another body believed to be Ramses I.
