Embark on a museum crawl in Amman
Jordan's capital city of Amman has a long and storied past, having gone through multiple periods of decline and renewal. As recently as 1900, the city was only home to about 2,000 residents, but travelers who visit Amman on a Jordan tour will find it is once again a thriving, cosmopolitan metropolis. To learn about the city's amazing story and gain a better understanding of the whole Middle East region, travelers can visit some of Amman's many museums.
The Jordan Archaeological Museum is an excellent place to begin a museum crawl, as it houses artifacts from the paleolithic period to the present day. Highlights of the collection include some of the Dead Sea Scrolls and plaster statues from 'Ain Ghazal that date from about 6,000 B.C.
One of Amman's most impressive ruins, the Roman Theatre, houses another of its signature museums, the Jordanian Museum of Popular Traditions. The museum's five exhibition halls are devoted to preserving Palestinian heritage and include examples of traditional attire, pottery, cooking utensils, artwork, jewelry and handicrafts.
The Royal Automobile Museum covers a more recent period of Jordanian history, from the 1920s to the present, telling the story of modern Jordan by displaying the vehicles used by the royals from the time of King Abdullah I. The collection includes a 1955 Mercedes 300 SL, famous for its "gullwing" design.
