EGYPT AND MIDDLE EAST TOURS
Duality in Kom Ombo Temple
Travelers on Egypt tours often find themselves along the banks of the Nile River. Although there is much to see in the busy tourist city, those who travel 30 miles north of Aswan will find numerous relics and many traditions at the double temple of Kom Ombo.
Located in the fertile area of Kom Ombo, an important stop for trade routes along the Nile, through the Red Sea and Nubia, the town today supports both its original Egyptian inhabitants and a more recent Nubian community.
Created between the 2nd and 1st centuries, B.C., Kom Ombo was built to honor Sobek, the crocodile-headed god, and Haroeris, the falcon-headed god. Honoring both gods simultaneously, the temple has two of almost everything. Featuring intricate wall reliefs, expertly carved Egyptian columns, and an abundance of clay coffins, the site offers hours of exploration for any visitor.
The southern end honors Sobek, and features a number of mummified crocodiles, whose importance to the Nile was highly regarded by Egyptian priests. The north end of the temple honors Haroeris, who was known for his healing powers. In ancient times, the temple was used by priests to assist individuals seeking medical help.
