Admire the 'Pearl of the Mediterranean' on a tour of Egypt
Travelers who venture to Alexandria while on a tour of Egypt will find many fascinating historic sites to visit, which paint a picture of the incredible history of this storied city, known as the "Pearl of the Mediterranean."
From its earliest days, Alexandria was influenced by Greek and Roman ideals as much as Egyptian culture, and the city's famous library was long a repository of the combined learning of these three great civilizations. The ancient library did not survive the seventh century, but a modern day equivalent was opened in 2002. This impressive contemporary building features 11 levels of books and houses the Antiquities Museum, containing more than 1,000 objects uncovered during the library's construction.
While the Antiquities Museum has brought historical artifacts above ground, many of Alexandria's most amazing attractions remain below sea level. The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa are 115 feet underground. The burial chambers are as popular with children as adults, and the wall art displays a distinctive mix of Egyptian, Greek and Roman markings.
History buffs with a penchant for adventure can go on a scuba diving adventure in the Mediterranean, where they can see everything from remnants of the Pharos lighthouse to wreckage from Napoleon Bonaparte's fleet, defeated here by Horatio Nelson in 1798.
