CENTRAL AMERICAN TOURS

Vultures are among the many species that live in the Rio Platano Reserve of Honduras. Tour Honduras to explore the legendary White City region

The Rio Platano Reserve offers travelers on Honduras tours the chance to see many of Central America's signature animals in the amazing rainforests that have been home to indigenous people since the Mayans.

Located in northwest Honduras, the reserve encompasses the Platano River basin, from the mountainous headwaters to the coastal plain. In addition to tropical rainforest, the park includes mangrove swamps and savannah and is home to a tremendous diversity of species. Visitors can spot giant anteaters, tapirs, jaguarondi and even jaguars. Caimans, Central American otters and American crocodiles are among the creatures living in the Platano and other waterways, while harpy eagles, green macaws, king vultures and other birds fly overhead.

For centuries, legends circulated of a fabulous lost city, the White City, within the reserve's precincts, and recent archaeological digs have unearthed impressive Mayan ruins. Though visitors will probably not find a lost city in the jungle, they can visit the small villages where more than 2,000 indigenous people still live as they have for generations, using the rich resources of their surrounding environment.

Tilman Jaeger, officer with the International Union for Conservation of Nature, said, "Rio Platano is a gem of global importance due to its largely intact forests and other habitats but also the variety of indigenous and local cultures that live in and around it."
