The famous mountains of Chirripo National Park, Costa Rica
Chirripo is the highest mountain peak that travelers on a tour of Costa Rica can see. Those interested in visiting this major peak can come to Chirripo National Park, which is also home to two other mountains almost as high as Chirripo. Evergreen and deciduous trees, grasslands and intriguing forms of plant and animal life can also be observed.
This park, along with the mountain that is one of its most distinguishing highlights, earned its name from several glacial lakes contained within its borders. Chirripo, a word coming from Costa Rica's indigenous societies, means "eternal waters" in English.
Travelers may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of several rare - and endangered - species, including the resplendent quetzal and harpy eagle. Numerous other colorfully feathered birds can be seen, along with peculiar reptiles such as the green spiny lizard and highland alligator lizard.
Those visiting Chirripo between January and May should take note that these months are the most susceptible to forest fires. Additionally, temperatures at particularly high altitudes can fall below freezing at night during any time of year.
Activities that can be enjoyed in Chirripo National Park include hiking along the miles of available trails and lodging for extended climbing trips. Travelers choosing to climb are advised to bring bottled water, sunscreen and food.
