Sloth it up in Aviarios
People on Costa Rica tours can get better acquainted with some of the country’s cutest residents at the Sloth Rescue and Sanctuary of Costa Rica in Aviarios.
Started by Judy Arroyo more than 20 years ago, the sanctuary has aided more than 150 sloths in their process to recovery. Whether they are orphaned, maimed or tortured, the animals receive a quality home and rehabilitation process at the sanctuary, while additionally offering visitors a rare chance to interact with creatures known for their slow progression.
While sloths are the main attraction at the sanctuary, the grounds are home to a plethora of other Costa Rican species. Visitors can walk along the sanctuary’s many hiking trails to the sounds of nearby howler monkeys, often accompanied in the tree by white faced and spider monkeys. Canoe trips along the Rio Estrella often reward visitors with glimpses of river otters and a number of birds - more than 300 species, in fact, have been identified in the sanctuary’s vicinity.
With human development in Costa Rica continuing to limit sloth habitats, visitors to the sanctuary are helping to aid in the survival of these very unique creatures.
