Impressive staircases are part of the Mayan ruins in Honduras and Guatemala. Places to visit in Guatemala and Honduras: Quirigua and Copan

Travelers on tours of Guatemala and Honduras who are interested in Mayan culture should consider including the impressive ruins of Quirigua and Copan on their itineraries.

Quirigua, located near the town of Los Amates in northern Guatemala, close to the Honduran border, includes beautiful remnants of an important Mayan city that was at its height between the 7th and 10th centuries.

Elaborately sculpted stelae and a series of monumental plazas are among Quirigua's highlights. The stelae are gargantuan stone columns, constructed without metal tools, featuring dated heiroglyphs. The largest of the stelae, dating from 771 A.D., measures 35 feet tall by 5 feet wide and 4 feet thick. Quirigua's Central Plaza, Ceremonial Plaza and Plaza of the Temple are complex arrangements of pyramids, staircases and terraces.

After taking in the wonders of Quirigua, travelers can cross the border into Honduras and head for the ruins of Copan.

Like Quirigua, Copan includes a number of impressive plazas. The most unique of these is the Hieroglyphic Stairway Plaza, featuring 328-foot-wide steps on which more than 1,800 hieroglyphic characters were inscribed. The opposite side of the plaza features another stairway, decorated with sculpted jaguars.

While at Copan, travelers can admire the beautiful surrounding landscapes on horseback and stop in at the Enchanted Wings butterfly farm, which houses colorful butterflies, moths and about 150 species of native orchids.
