Marvel at the biodiversity of Tortuguero National Park
Central America is home to some of the world's most diverse natural landscapes, and travelers can experience this astounding biodiversity firsthand when they visit Tortuguero National Park during a tour of Costa Rica.
Located along the Caribbean coast of northeastern Costa Rica, Tortuguero covers 120 square miles of rainforests, wetlands, swamps, lagoons and seashore. Its remote location means that it can only be accessed by airplane or boat, but its mind-boggling array of plants and animals help make it the third most-visited park in the country.
Tortuguero is named for the many kinds of sea turtles that nest on its beaches during breeding season. If they come at the right time of year, travelers may be able to see hawksbill, loggerhead, green and leatherback turtles digging their nests or hatching from beneath the sand.
The park's rivers are home to animals like manatees, caimans, crocodiles and the tropical gar, a fish that is considered to be a "living fossil." Meanwhile, the forests of Tortuguero contain jaguars, sloths, three monkey species, basilisk lizards, poison dart frogs, toucans, peacocks, parrots and much more.
