Learn of ancient Mayan traditions in Chichen Itza
Though it is often thought of as a haven for beach going college kids, Mexico offers visitors on North America tours a chance to explore one of the most accomplished and celebrated cultures in the continent's history, the Maya. These storied people left stunning monuments across a vast expanse of Latin America, and few locations have as much character as the stunning archaeological site of Chichen Itza.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to pre-Columbian times, Chichen Itza is a shining example of the enduring passion of the Mayan people. The city was once a popular destination for Mayan pilgrims, who journeyed for miles to visit the Sacred Cenote, a natural well that was said to be holy to the rain god, Chac.
In the year 987 AD, the city was reborn as the center of the Maya, with a large pyramid constructed in honor of the people's ruler and their chief god, Kukulcan (also known as Quetzalcoatl). During this period, many temples statues and other structures were built – many of which remain to this day.
When booking a Mexico tour, visitors to Chichen Itza should be sure to explore the interior temple, a smaller temple pyramid located within the larger Kukulcan pyramid.
