Go for a dive in Costa Rica's Seamounts Marine Management Area
During a tour of Costa Rica, vacationers looking to explore the wonders of the country's Pacific Coast can dive into the Seamounts Marine Management Area, a vast new reserve created earlier this year.
First established in March, the Seamounts Marine Management Area actually incorporates several other protected zones that had previously been governed independently by Costa Rican conservation authorities. In particular, the park is centered around Cocos Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous as a haven for ocean-dwelling creatures.
Despite being designed around Cocos, the new marine park encompasses so much more. Covering an area of 3,861 square miles, it is larger than Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming - not to mention five times bigger than the previous protected zone in the area.
Travelers who visit the Seamounts Marine Management Area can spot a diverse array of underwater animals, including white-tipped reef sharks, whale sharks, hammerhead sharks and leatherback turtles. Many of the denizens of the reserve are endemic to the area, so they can be seen nowhere else on Earth.
