CENTRAL AMERICAN TOURS
Examine the strange spheres of Palmar Sur
A large intersection of modern cultures and ancient art, Palmar Sur is a good place to examine some of the more peculiar features of Central America on Costa Rica tours.
Found at the far northern tip of the Osa Peninsula, Palmar Sur gives easy access to the natural landscapes of Drake Bay. Providing excellent water and land-based adventures, visitors can walk among trails touting toucan-filled treetops, swim amid crystal clear waters with huge sea turtles, or attempt to catch "a whopper" along the high seas.
To the north lies the Durika Reserve. The reserve, which acts as a buffer zone for the Amistad International Biosphere, is run by a local self-sufficient agricultural community and is a great example of ingenuitive environmental activism in the country.
One of the most mysterious features and largest attractions in Palmar Sur are its large, spherical balls. Called esferas piedras, the stones were carved by the ancient dequis culture. While there is much speculation on their purpose, there aren't solid answers as to why these carvings exist. While the piedras are found throughout the region, often in seemingly odd locations for the modern day, one of the most accessible is found in Palmar's main square.
