Catch a wave and catch your breath in Puerto Viejo
The town of Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast is an excellent base from which travelers on Costa Rica tours can seek out activities in the nearby ocean and jungle.
Close to the town, Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is home to one of the only coral reefs in Costa Rican waters. Dive and snorkel trips give travelers an opportunity to swim among colorful tropical fish, lobsters, urchins and anemones. Many other exotic species - including crocodiles, pacas and tapirs - live in the refuge's mangrove swamps and forests.
The beaches close to Puerto Viejo are noteworthy for their clear water and reliable waves, making them a favorite for surfers. While the biggest breaks in Costa Rica occur in the area, those on Costa Rica tours with their family will find that in many places the water is great for kids, who can learn the basics of wave-riding by participating in free community surf lessons. Quiet coves create ideal, uncrowded swim spots for small travel groups.
After hanging ten, travelers might want to hang out in Puerto Viejo itself, which is a welcoming town with a diverse population that includes many people of Afro-Caribbean descent. A low-key vibe makes it a relaxing place to recharge after participating in some of the area's adrenaline-inducing activities, such as white-water rafting.
