Adventurous delights in Liberia
The Costa Rican city of Liberia boasts several outstanding features, many of which are extremely foreign to visitors. Those who give Liberia’s offerings a chance, however, are heartily rewarded on their Costa Rica adventure tours.
While many ingredients will be familiar, preparations and combinations in Liberia’s cuisine create some unusual dishes. Compared by many to frog eggs in water, the sweet drink of chan is made with flower seeds or cayol, and may take some getting used to. Horchata, a beverage made from chocolate, cinnamon, peanuts, rice and milk, however, is a tasty drink that quickly wins over many travelers.
Liberia also offers some interesting corn-based dishes. Chorreadas are corn pancakes served with cheese or cream. Arroz de maiz, whose name may be misleading to some Spanish-speaking visitors, features broken-up corn chips cooked with chicken.
Travelers can delight other senses in the nearby Parque Nacional Rincon de la Vieja. Encompassing acres of colorful flowers and lush forests, most travelers seek out the park’s thermal waters, boiling mud pits and sulfuric vapor pools. For those willing to embark on a tactile and olfactory adventure, the park provides a uniquely relaxing environment.
