Visit the Whitsunday Islands off the coast of Australia
When taking a trip to the "land down under" on a tour of Australia, travelers may want to experience the visual majesty of the Whitsunday Islands, located just off the coast of Australia. These islands are well-known and appreciated for their proximity to the world-famous Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef formation in the world.
The majority of the 90-plus Whitsunday Islands are uninhabited. All but four are designated as protected national parks by the Australian government. Despite this, a number of resort hotels are located throughout the chain of islands for tourists to stay during their holidays.
A considerable number of private tour companies service the waters surrounding this area, allowing travelers to bask in the sun on charter boats while enjoying the awe-inspiring natural scenery. The islands are actually the tips of submerged mountains, covered with scattered pockets of coral.
The Great Barrier Reef, which is arguably the most prominent natural feature in this area aside from the islands themselves, is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. According to the organization, the Reef contains 1,500 fish species, 400 different types of coral and approximately 4,000 species of mollusk.
