Visit Ningaloo Reef to swim with whale sharks
Many people who go down under pay a visit to the Great Barrier Reef, but travelers who want to include a destination off the beaten path on their tour of Australia can go snorkeling with whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef.
Ningaloo is a massive fringing coral reef that stretches off the coast of the state of Western Australia. Situated around 750 miles north of Perth, the reef is famous both for its immense size and for its remarkable proximity to land. In some places, the attraction sits just a quarter of a mile away from the shore, making it amazingly convenient for people looking to go diving.
The reef is home to a wide variety of marine life, including dolphins, dugongs, manta rays, humpback whales, sea turtles, fish, coral, anemones, eels, clownfish and much more. The star attraction in the area, however, is the whale shark. Measuring up to 40 feet in length, this creature is the world's biggest fish.
On a visit to Ningaloo, divers can get up close and personal with the ocean-dwelling giants. In particular, the vast fish visit the area between April and June to feed. Snorkelers don't need to worry about being eaten, however, as the gentle creatures only dine on tiny plankton.
