Toboggan the sand hills of Moreton Island
Travelers on Australia tours who cross the bay from Brisbane to Moreton Island will find it hard to believe they are within 30 miles of a bustling metropolis.
Except for a few rocky outcroppings, Moreton is made entirely of sand, making it an extraordinary natural phenomenon. In addition to partaking in the fun of sand tobogganing, visitors can climb the 918-foot Mount Tempest, the tallest sand hill in the world, to view the spectacular island surrounded by aquamarine sea.
Despite being made of sand, the island is colorful due to its profuse wildflowers and brightly feathered birds. The island was once Queensland's only whaling station, and the water of Moreton Bay is still home to humpback whales and dugongs, a rare kind of manatee. The old whaling station is now a hotel that hosts wild dolphin feedings at dusk.
In addition to the old whaling station, history buffs will want to visit the Cape Moreton Lighthouse, which was constructed in 1857 and is now the oldest lighthouse operating in Queensland. There are also historical remains of a pre-World War II era military installation and remnants of Aboriginal settlements on the island.
Moreton Island is an unspoiled paradise without paved roads, but four-wheel-drive tours are a great option. Travelers can experience the island in a variety of ways, from overnight camping trips to day-long scuba or snorkeling excursions.
