See the mysterious Paronella Park in Queensland, Australia
Travelers on Australia tours may not have heard of Paronella Park in the Mena Creek area of Queensland, Australia, as it has somewhat less name recognition than world-famous attractions like Kakadu National Park or the Sydney Opera House. Nonetheless, this one-of-a-kind park boasts an intriguing story that is worthy of consideration as a vacation destination.
Paronella Park was built by Jose Paronella throughout the early 1930s and opened to the public in 1935. An immigrant from the Catalonia region of Spain, Paronella created a site with inspiration clearly cribbed from classical Spanish architecture.
In its original incarnations, the park featured a ballroom, cinema, a museum featuring local Queensland curiosities and more. Beginning in 1946, various natural disasters began chipping away at Paronella Park, including but not limited to excessive rains that caused collapses, fires and floods. It fell into total disarray after 1979 and was not restored until 1993.
Today, Paronella Park retains one of its original functions and serves as a wedding, function and banquet facility as well as a tourist curiosity.
In 2004, the park won the Emerging Business Award from Queensland's government-sponsored Reconciliation Awards for Business.
