Learn about the icy continent at the International Antarctic Centre in New Zealand
Travelers who want a taste of the planet's icy southern continent during a tour of New Zealand won't want to miss the International Antarctic Centre in the city of Christchurch.
This attraction is the largest facility in the world dedicated to educating visitors about ongoing scientific research taking place in Antarctica. In its main hall, visitors can check out an array of displays featuring the continent's climate and wildlife, including a gallery with information on how humans have affected Antarctica and an aquarium full of species found on the seafloor of the McMurdo Sound.
Guests at the International Antarctic Centre can learn more about what it feels like down south in the facility's 4D theater, which enhances the visual experience of its interesting films by using snow, wind, water, lightning and bubbles.
One of the most popular features of the museum is the New Zealand Blue Penguin Encounter. Here, guests can get up close and personal with a unique penguin species found around the country's coastline. They can also go for a spin in an authentic Antarctic all-terrain vehicle at the Hagglund Ride.
