AUSTRALIA TOURS

Groves of gum trees and diverse eucalyptus species reign in the plateaus and enclaves of the Blue Mountains. Gorges and gum trees in the Blue Mountains

Enclaves of dewy ferns and plateaus of rare plant species make up the Blue Mountains, one of the easiest natural wonders to escape to on Australia tours.

A little more than an hour west of Sydney, the temperate climate and high altitude breezes make the Blue Mountains a good travel destination year-round. While here, guests can hike, bike, canoe or simply stand in awe of the region’s enormous chasms, thunderous waterfalls and vibrant parrots.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Blue Mountains are highlighted by their diverse eucalyptus species. Although Australia is known for its distinct wildlife, the Blue Mountains are known worldwide for the isolated evolutionary adaptations of their eucalyptus, which began in the post-Gondwana era. Even visitors without a dendrology background will be able to appreciate the wide variance in the area’s trees, where structural differences and diverse habitats are widely visible.

The Blue Mountains are also home to more than 10 percent of Australia’s vascular plant species, some of the oldest plants in the world, and are one of the few microsites for the Wollemi pine. The prolific groves of gum trees, however, should also not be missed, as their bouncy branches and open canopies are simply delightful to experience.
