Enjoy the highlights of Tasmania's Bass Strait Islands
A tour of Australia can expose travelers to a plethora of visually impressive natural locations and enjoyable cultural activities. The Bass Strait Islands, two archipelagos located off the coast of Tasmania provide the chance to see fascinating wildlife within a quiet, relaxed atmosphere ideal for those on vacation.
The archipelagos are best-known for two major islands- King Island of the Hunter group and Flinders Island of the Furneax group.
The major and minor islands of both groups feature a wide variety of intriguing animals, including the platypus, wallaby, Cape Barren goose and much more. Each island is popular among bird-watchers, particularly Flinders due to its Important Bird Area, which contains numerous unique birds not found anywhere else.
Other natural features include King Island's Lavinia State Reserve, containing the major ocean beaches Lavinia Beach and Nine Mile Beach, and Flinders Island's numerous coastal lagoons and impressive sand dunes.
Tasmania is widely known for its natural features, many of which have remained unaffected by the Australian state's populated settlements. Approximately 37 percent of the island's landmass consists of areas legally designated as nature preserves, according to Tasmania's Parks and Wildlife Service.
