Beijing's Factory 798 showcases local modern art

Those taking part in a tour of China who have a taste for the fascinating, abstract characteristics of modern art will want to visit Factory 798, a one-of-a-kind group of art galleries in Beijing. The group of galleries' future has yet to be determined, as city officials have considered co-opting the space for commercial reasons.

In the meantime, travelers to China who consider themselves art enthusiasts may want to flock to the gallery. The area has intriguing origins- it was once a weapons factory, created by designers from the former Soviet Union.

Rather than a single gallery, Factory 798 is a series of different facilities. One, the UCCA, is a non-profit gallery featuring both international and Chinese modern art. 798 Photo showcases groundbreaking work in photography.

Perhaps the most notable facilities within Factory 798 are 798 Space, designed with architecture reminiscent of the Bauhaus school of German abstract art, and Beijing Tokyo Art Projects, the first of the factory's galleries to open.

The 798 Space gallery was constructed in the early 1950s, and has maintained a respectable reputation ever since. Travelers looking for truly avant-garde Chinese art can visit the nearby village of Song Zhuang, just to the east of Beijing.
