Romania

Romania is located in south Central Europe, bordering on the Black Sea. The Danube flows through the country and almost all of the Danube Delta is located within its territory. The territory's recorded history encompasses such eras as the Dacians, Roman Empire (origination of the Romanian language), Kingdom of Hungary, and Ottoman Empire. As a nation-state, the country was formed by the merging of Moldavia and Wallachia in 1859 and it gained recognition of its independence in 1878. Later, in 1918, the country was expanded with the inclusion of Transylvania, Bukovina and Bessarabia. At the end of World War II, Romania became a member of the Warsaw Pact. With the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, Romania started a series of political and economic reforms, culminating with its membership in the EU in 2007. The capitol of Bucharest is the transportation hub, but the country has a embarrasement of riches when it comes to tourism. The castles of Transylvania, mountain hiking, rural villages, untouched forests, the Danube Delta, Black Sea resorts, and more. It is on the "hot list" of experienced travelers.
