One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal is a 77km ship canal in Panama that joins the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, replacing the previously long and treacherous route via the Strait of Magellan or Cape Horn. Due to the shape of Panama and the position of the locks and passageways used for the canal, the Atlantic Ocean's access point to the canal is longitudinally westward of the Pacific Ocean's access point, which lies more east, contrary to their traditional positions of the Atlantic being on the east side of the Americas, with the Pacific on the west.
