Côte d'Ivoire (also referred to as "Ivory Coast") is a country in West Africa. It has a southerly facing North Atlantic Ocean coast, and is surrounded by Ghana to the east, Liberia to the west, Guinea to the northwest, Mali to the north, and Burkina Faso to the northeast. Three National Parks are on the UNESCO World Heritage List; Taï National Park, Comoe National Park, Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve.The country, through its production of coffee and cocoa, was an economic powerhouse during the 1960s and 1970s in West Africa. As a result of the economic crisis in the 1980s, the country experienced a period of political and social turmoil. It has recently returned to a stable democracy.
