Day 5
Esquel Esquel is a town in the northwest of the province of Chubut, in the Argentine Patagonia. It is located in the Futaleufú Department, of which it is the government's site. The town's name derives from a Mapuche term meaning "thorn", which refers to the characteristics of the local flora, including several spiny bushes, most famously the Calafate. The founding of the town dates back to the arrival of Welsh immigrants in Chubut in 1865. The settlement was created on 25 February 1906, as an extension of the Colonia 16 de Octubre, now known as Trevelin. The city, the main town of the area, is located by the Esquel Stream and surrounded by the mountains La Zeta, La Cruz, Cerro 21 and La Hoya. La Hoya is known as a ski resort with good quality snow right through the spring. The Los Alerces National Park is 50 km northwest of the city. Today we ride through the famous "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid" region to Esquel, at the foot of the Andes Mountains. We'll be surrounded by mountains as we travel on relaxing, country roads. Esquel – which appears like a smaller and more laid back Bariloche – welcomes us again with scenic beauty and a luxurious hotel. Located only 13 km of our hotel is the Mountain Activity Center La Hoya. This ski resort stands out for two of its main characteristics: quality snow well into October and a purely family environment. In Patagonia, Argentina, lying on the mountain, is located the city of Esquel. There with the warmth of its people for a real Patagonian Lodge, where we take care of small details to make your stay memorable and your wishes are alone return.
