Day 1
St. John's St. John's is the provincial capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, located on the eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland. The city enjoys a long and vibrant history as the oldest English-founded city in North America. The harbour was a frequent haven for European fisherman throughout the early 1500s, and was officially declared an English colony in 1583. St. John's has over 400 restaurants. Situated in the downtown area on Water St. and Duckworth, there are numerous shops, restaurants and historic buildings. It is a rugged and rocky outcrop overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, with a distinctive accent and fishing culture that makes it completely unique. Welcome to the rugged landscape of Newfoundland - known for its friendly natives and quaint fishing villages. You will have the use of a rental vehicle for 7 days on an unlimited mileage basis. Settle into your home away from home. Relax on the deck and breathe in the fresh air. If you feel like exploring St John's today, it is an easy walk from your house. There are many sights and activities to be done in and around St John's. Consider a sailing cruise to see whales and marine life, an afternoon kayaking, or a sightseeing trip to see any of the picturesque fishing villages along the coast such as Logy Bay, Middle Cove, Torbay, Flat Rock and Pouch Covenorth of St. John’s. Alternatively, a scenic ferry ride to Bell Island and tour the island may be of interest or a full day excursion taking in the pretty communities along the Irish loop with a majestic coastline scenery. For bird lovers, you may like to consider a guided visit to see the bird sanctuary at Cape St. Mary’s with over 70,000 birds. Please speak to your Sales Advisor if any of these options are of interest. A fully stocked refrigerator based on your personal preference will be arranged for you in advance so you will have everything you require during your stay. Please speak to your Sales Advisor to discuss. Profiled in Canadian Home & Country Magazine in 2008, Hipditch House is located a mere ten-minute walk from St. John's, in the historic Battery Neighbourhood. This culturally rich neighbourhood—which retains the look and character of a 19th century fishing village despite its city location—is the oldest in St. John's, a fitting place for a century-old house like Hipditch. In 2005, the home was completely renovated in a manner that perfectly combines nautical themes with eclectic styles. One step outside and you're along Signal Hill National Historic Park, which sits high above the harbour at the foot of Gibbet Hill. You'll also notice two fantastic interconnected trails that pass by the house: North Head and Grand Concourse. The house consists of three bedrooms as well as an expansive kitchen (with day bed), and a deck complete with a barbeque. Enjoy the incredible city and harbour views from the house as you experience Eastern Canadian coastal living. Overnight at Hipditch House Self Catering. |

Day 2
St. John's To get the most out of your stay in St John's, you will have a morning orientation session with a local hiking expert today so you can get the "lay of the land" so to speak. We will provide you with a guidebook that details world-class trails around Newfoundland’s Avalon and Bonavista Peninsulas. The guidebook will provide you with hiking and walking options ranging from relaxing 1-2 hour jaunts, up to more challenging daily hikes that extend to 5-6 hours. It’s your decision to hike all day, or to take a day off. The guidebook will also indicate the challenge level and recommended fitness level. Tips and notes on cultural activities, restaurants, and other wildlife sights are also offered to compliment your stay. Choose from any of the suggested hiking routes today - remember they are not just confined to the wilderness - there are also some urban walking routes that you can choose from. Please let your Sales Advisor know if you would like to have any packed lunches arranged for you during your trip (additional cost). Overnight at Hipditch House Self Catering. |

Day 3
St. John's The "Travellers Diary" guide which you will be provided with self-directs you not only to the popular sights in the vicinity of the homes you will stay at, but also to the unique and out of the way pubs, nature sites, shops and heritage sites that are not well known to the average sightseer. But there's a more important aspect of the guide that makes the trip great; Using hidden agendas, we sometimes direct you to places with the hope you will bump into some of the more colourful characters that we know live or work in the area. For example, we may recommend a general store as the last stop for supplies for miles, but really we're trying to get you to meet the owner! In addition, where possible, we attach a name to a recommended attraction with the expectation that you will seek out the person when you arrive at the site. The travel guide leads you to a situation, but it is up to you to make the exchange happen through the development of your own relationship. It's all by chance--which creates a true, meaningful experience. Please let your Sales Advisor know if you would like to have the company of an Interpretive Guide for any of the days that you are hiking as this can be arranged for you. Day 4
Bonavista Unlike many Newfoundland coastal settlements, Bonavista was built on an open plain, not in a steep cove, and thus had room to expand to its current area of 31.5 square kilometres. Make your way from St John's to Bonavista today in your hired car - about a four hour straight drive. You may like to stop off at various places en route - refer to your Travellers Diary guide for suggestions. A fully stocked refrigerator based on your personal order can be arranged for you in advance so you will have everything you require during your stay. Please speak to your Sales Advisor to discuss your preferences. The Thomas Mouland House was named after its original owner who survived the great Newfoundland Sealing disaster of 1914. The Thomas Mouland House is celebrated for both age and architecture. In 2006, with the assistance of the Bonavista Historical Society, the home was moved across the street, still residing in the historic Mockbeggar neighbourhood of Bonavista, the province's largest fishing village still in operation (pop. 3,000). The home's 'new' site is located on the Discovery Trail—about three hours from St. John's—and its structural integrity has been beautifully preserved. With the exception of a few necessary alterations, the home's interior remains intact. Overnight at Thomas Mouland House (Self Catering). |
