Itinerary

Day 1 Leon

Leon is a fascinating city steeped in history including the magnificent buildings of the San Isidro, Cathedral and the historical quarter.

Meet your driver for a private airport transfer today.

Regardless of whether you are staying at the Parador of Leon, known as the Hostal San Marcos, it is worth exploring the interior of the building.
One of the jewels of the city, this magnificent building was originally a hostal built to shelter the pilgrims on the Santiago Way. In the 15th century it was converted into a monastery, in the 17th century it was used as a prison and during the Spanish Civil War served as an army barracks. Today it is one of Spain's most impressive hotels. Part of the building is the Archeological Museum of Leon, and is well worth a visit. Another site worth investigating is the Romanic San Isidoro Basilica in San Isidoro Plaza which has a beautiful façade and an 11th-century baptism font.  The spectacular 12th century gothic cathedral sits proudly in the In the Plaza Regla and boasts wonderful tall stained glass windows which are as impressive at night when it is illuminated, as by day. The musuem inside the cathedral has an interesting collection of paintings and sculptures. The impressive modern art gallery of MUSAC holds exhibitions of well-known Spanish and international artists.

The Parador was originally a monastery founded in the twelfth century to provide lodging for the pilgrims travelling to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. This is one of the most beautiful Renaissance building in Spain. There are many public rooms all filled with paintings, carvings and tapestries. Royal halls, large rooms, library and a restaurant offering fine cuisine make the Parador de San Marcos a unique place to stay in the Pilgrim's Way and the Via de la Plata.

Today you will leave Asturias and enter into the province of Galicia, and the first stop will be at Ribadeo, where the Eo River runs into the sea.

Stretch your legs as you discover the amazing natural beauty of Cathedral Beach. Chiseled by the waves into the rugged Galician coast, is a stone Atlantis that rises from the depths and gets swallowed by the sea—daily. As the tide recedes, it lays bare the lower parts of the majestic rocks lining the shore. You can walk down the concrete staircase, the only man-made architectural object you will see on the beach, and wander between the wet sand-paved natural hallways, black walls glistening in the sun; leftover seawater trickling from the caverns; arches that resemble cathedral buttresses reflected in the leftover pools of water. After a few hours, foaming waves return to claim their sculptures, like menacing clouds gathering above cathedral peaks, only these are working their way up.

Sit down to lunch in Ribadeo.

In the afternoon you will arrive by train to  Viveiro.

Enjoy dinner this evening.

Day 9 Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the autonomous community of Galicia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the north west of Spain in the province of A Coruña, it was the "European City of Culture" for the year 2000. The city's Cathedral is the destination today, as it has been throughout history, of the important 9th century medieval pilgrimage route, the Way of St. James.

You'll transfer from Viveiro to Ferrol by train this morning.

From Ferrol, you'll be transfered by coach, to Santiago de Compostela, the final destination  for the Jacobean pilgrims, where the Obradoiro's Square, the Platerias and the Cathedral stand like a jewel. Enjoy exporing the city with its winding pedestrianised streets with many shops and bars.

The Parador Hostal dos Reis Católicos (5*) combines history, art and tradition. The goal of pilgrims and the emblem of St. James, the Hostal dos Reis Católicos, together with the cathedral forms one of the world’s most remarkable, and most visited, urban settings. The Hostal, which first saw life as a Royal Hospital in 1499 to house the many pilgrims arriving in Santiago, today still invites the traveller to enjoy this universal and fascinating city. Considered the oldest hotel in the world, it is also one of the most luxurious and beautiful. It has four extremely beautiful cloisters, elegant public rooms, spectacular bedrooms and a luxurious dining room.
