The principality of Monaco and city of Monte Carlo lie on the southern Mediterranean Sea coast of France, near the border with Italy, in Southern Europe. It is the second smallest independent state in the world (after the Vatican) and is almost entirely urban. With no natural resources to exploit other than its location and climate, the principality has become a resort for tourists and a tax haven for businesses. Monaco is six times the size of the Vatican. Though it has lost the title of world's most densely populated city to Macau, it remains by far the world's most densely populated independent country with second place Singapore lagging some 10,000 people per square kilometer behind.
