Itinerary

Day 1 Stockholm

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden. Strikingly pretty, it is arguably one of the most beautiful capital cities in the world. The city is made up of 14 islands connected by some 50 bridges on Lake Malaren, which flows into the Baltic Sea and passes an archipelago with some 24,000 islands and islets). The city is a very lively, cosmopolitan place with both modern Scandinavian architecture including lots of brass and steel, along with fairy tale towers, a captivating Old Town (Gamla Stan) and lots of green space. Over 30% of the city area is made up of waterways and another 30% is made up of parks and green spaces, giving Stockholm perhaps the freshest air and widest lungs of any European capital. Most attractions in Stockholm are found in what Stockholmers call "innerstaden", the inner city - historically the zone within the city tolls. The geography of Stockholm, with its islands and bodies of water, makes for a natural division of the inner city into three major zones. Outside the inner city, the city has a mainly suburban character.

Day 3 Stockholm

Sinking to the bottom of the harbour in 1628, the Vasa is arguably the best preserved ancient maritime artifact in the world. Its maiden voyage lasted a mere 1300 metres before capsizing just off shore. Early attempts to raise it were unsuccessful, but a state backed effort began salvage in 1956. In 1961, after years of preparation and raising small portions of the ship, the main lift was performed. However, this was just the beginning. Preservations efforts would continue until 1979, when the spraying of the preservative substance was complete.

This elaborate effort and years of hard work have left a legacy for future generations to experience and learn about their seafaring past. Upon entry into the building, you are overwhelemed by the completely restored and preserved Vasa. The ship is incredibly fully assembled indoors multiple related exhibits depicting subjects such as the building process, life on board and Sweden’s rich maritime history.

Dedicate at least a morning to this museum, as it is unlike any other in the world and you will find yourself captivated by the vastness of the ship and the science and dedication behind its preservation.
