Day 2 Berat

Berat is a town located in south-central Albania. It is the capital of both the District of Berat and the larger County of Berat. The old town (Mangalem district) was inscribed on the World Heritage List in July 2008.It lies on the right bank of the river Osum, a short distance from the point where it is joined by the Molisht river. It is a remarkable Albanian town, with a wealth of beautiful buildings of high architectural and historical interest. The pine forests above the city, on the slopes of the towering Tomorr mountains, provide a backdrop of appropriate grandeur. The town is still renowned for its historic architecture and scenic beauty and is known as the "Town of a Thousand Windows", due to the many large windows of the old decorated houses overlooking the town.

Travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Berat along with your private guide on this full day tour. The city is more than 2400 years old and one of the most attractive towns in Albania. Established in the 3rd century B.C it was known as the fortified city of Antipatrea. The castle is the only one in Albania with houses and inhabitants within its walls, living in exactly the same place their predecessors did centuries ago. Visit the Fortress, Onufri Museum and several churches with beautiful frescoes. Onufri was an Albanian master painter of the 16th century who painted many churches in Albania and Greece. After lunch (included), on the way back you will visit a local winery. After the tour concludes you will be transferred back to Tirana.

The Hotel Desareti (3*) is located just above the medieval district of Berat and from here you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the King’s Mosque and the old Bektashi Teke next to it. This is a hotel built in 2004 retaining similar characteristic architectural features with old buildings in the surrounding area. It has a limited capacity of 5 rooms, most of which offer splendid views of the oldest quarters in town, Mangalemi and Gorica with their white washed houses built on top of each other. The hotel has good sized and nicely decorated rooms, and its restaurant offers very tasty traditional Albanian and Italian cuisine.

Gjirokastra is a city in southern Albania with a population of 43,000. Lying in the historical region of Epirus, it is the capital of both the Gjirokastër District and the larger Gjirokastër County. Its old town is inscribed on the World Heritage List as "a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town, built by farmers of large estate." Gjirokastra is situated in a valley between the Gjerë mountains and the Drino River, at 300 meters above sea level. The city is overlooked by the Gjirokastër Castle. Gjirokastra is the birthplace of former Albanian communist leader Enver Hoxha and notable writer Ismail Kadare. It hosts the Eqerem Çabej University.

In the morning, you will drive to Gjirokastra, an UNESCO site and museum town with beautiful and very distinct architecture. On the way we stop at the ancient site of Bylis. Day 4 Saranda

Saranda, given its coastal access and Mediterranean climate, has become an important tourist attraction since the fall of Communism in Albania. Saranda as well as the rest of the Albanian Riviera, according to The Guardian, "is set to become the new 'undiscovered gem' of the overcrowded Med." It is situated on an open sea gulf of the Ionian Sea in the Mediterranean, 2 nautical miles from the Greek island of Corfu. Near Saranda are the remains of the ancient city of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

In the morning we depart for the coastal town of Saranda. On the way we stop to visit the beautiful Blue Eye spring. This is a natural spring shaped like an eye of beautiful blue and turquoise green colours among old maple trees. Afterwards, we make a quick stop at the Mesopotam Church where carvings of mythological beasts can be admired. We have lunch at the Lekuresi Fortress in Saranda, with beautiful views of the bay of Saranda and the Island of Corfu situated only 7 km away. After lunch we proceed to visit to the ancient city of Butrint a world heritage site. The city was first settled by Greek colonists and was continuously inhabited for centuries forming archaeological layers of passing civilizations making it an important finding in the Mediterranean. Furthermore it is situated in a beautiful peninsula among dense vegetation. We return to Saranda for the night.

The combination of the excellent location, the hotel facilities and our friendly staff, have established our hotel as one of the most enjoyed holiday choices of Saranda. Built on a rise as it is all the public rooms and guest rooms of our hotel are privileged with direct breathtaking sea views. Each of our guest rooms is larger than the "typical" guest room, and is thoughtfully appointed to assure that you have the most comfortable and productive stay while you are our guest. When you're ready to do more than look, the beach is only 2 minutes from the building.
