Start your journey in the German capital, Berlin. The city has been in the midst of rapid regeneration in the last few years and in the West, super-modern buildings provide a backdrop for a dynamic and cosmopolitan city that has a distinctly new millennial outlook. The East, meanwhile, is a model of twenty-first century urban development - the grey Communist concrete has been replaced with gleaming new structures that look to the city's future rather than dwelling on its past. Enjoy a walking tour of Berlin and discover Potsdam and Sansoucci Palace. Continue by train to Dresden with its long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendour. The city was completely destroyed by bombing towards the end of World War II, but comprehensive reconstruction work has helped to reconstruct the historic inner city, including the Katholische Hofkirche, the Semperoper and the Dresdner Frauenkirche. Take in the beautiful Baroque architecture before you bid the "Florence on the River Elbe" goodbye and travel onwards to Prague. The Czech capital is picturesquely located on the banks of the Vltava (Moldau) River, and has always played an important part in the history of Europe. The ‘Paris of the East’ is a UNESCO world cultural heritage site and noted for magnificent Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Belle Epoque/Art Nouveau and Cubist architecture.
