The city of Alexandria is Egypt second largest city, and stretches along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea a distance of around 3o kilometres. This place of ancient mysteries and history was founded by Alexander the Great in around 330 BC, and has remained one of Egypt's most beautiful and visited cities. Alexandria was an important and ideal city for ancient traders and merchants, and to date remains Egypt’s largest seaport, overseeing 80 % of the country’s overall imports and exports. During this tour of this unbelievable port city, be amazed by the many ancient monuments and structures including Pompey pillar, the Catacombs, the Roman Amphitheatre, Montazeh gardens, and the Biblioteca Alexandria. Day tours to some more modern, yet still historical area's around Alexandria, are also visited during this tour including a visit to Al Alamein Military Museum, where erected monuments and graves of fallen, unknown WWII soldiers of various European heritages are paid their proper homage. Whilst many of Alexandria's ancient monuments are in ruins, or buried beneath the waters of the Mediterranean, this city provides a wonderfully rich historic background combined with fantastic, modern accommodations, and upscale dining establishments, leaving a lasting impression to all whom visit her bounty.

NOTE; Travel in Egypt often involves early-morning starts, designed to avoid crowds and the hottest midday hours. It can be hot, especially in June, July and August, but there is virtually no humidity and evening temperatures cool off dramatically. Egypt is a moderate secular state, well used to hosting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. While you will want to avoid revealing clothing, loose shorts and short-sleeved shirts are fine for both genders

Itinerary

Day 1 Alexandria

Alexandria is the second-largest city in Egypt, and its largest seaport. In ancient times it was known for the Lighthouse of Alexandria (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), the Library of Alexandria and the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. Very little of the ancient city has survived into the present day. "Pompey's Pillar" is the most well-known ancient monument and is located on Alexandria's ancient acropolis.

Transfer from Cairo to Alexandria with private vehicle, driver, and English-speaking guide.

Day 2 Alexandria

This full day tour includes a private air-conditioned vehicle, driver, and a trained guide who can bring ancient Alexandria to life. Your morning visit in this lovely city known as “The Pearl of the Mediterranean” begins at the Catacombs of Kom El Shugafa, the largest Roman burial site discovered in Egypt to date, consisting of three tiers of tombs and chambers cut into the bedrock to a depth of about 35 meters. Continue to Egypt’s only Roman Amphi-theatre, a well-preserved theatre once stood with thirteen semi-circular tiers of white marble imported from Europe. Next stop will be at the Alexandria National Museum where you may browse among thousands of items on display. Papyrus scrolls, ancient perfume bottles and painted mummy cases are tastefully displayed as well as classic Greek statues showing the physical beauty that represent the ideals of that culture. The artifacts guide the visitor right up to the times of Mubarak and illustrate Alexandria’s role in the modern history of Egypt. Take your time for lunch in a traditional restaurant overlooking the beach. After lunch, visit the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, an integrated cultural complex, built on the believed site of the old Library of Alexandria, the largest of all antiquity. Enjoy a short drive to view the Abu El-Abbas Mosque, built over the tomb of the thirteenth century Andalusan saint, and proceed to the Qait Bay Fortress for a photo stop. Built on the site of Pharos, Alexandria's ancient lighthouse, it was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Just north of Qait Bay lies the site of the famous underwater excavation where hundreds of pillars, statues, and sphinxes have been found.

Enjoy a personalized lunch with your guide at a great local restaurant.

Day 3 Alexandria

This tour of the El-Alamein area begins as a private vehicle with driver and English speaking guide pick you up from your hotel, and make route to the El-Alamein Military Museum. Visit the famous battlegrounds of El-Alamein, 105km west of Alexandria, which played host to one of the most decisive battles of WWII. Of the battle at El-Alamein, Winston Churchill wrote: “Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat.” The Military Museum displays a collection of uniforms, memorabilia and pictorial material relating to the Battle of El-Alamein and the North African campaigns in general. Nearby, the British, Italian and German and Greek war cemeteries, holding the bodies of some of the 11,000 soldiers killed during the battle, are also well worth the visit. Upon completion of the tour, your private vehicle will deliver you back to your hotel.
