Come to Roatan and delve into the abyss during this once in a lifetime submarine experience! Resting atop the Bocannan Ridge lies the island of Roatan, just 40 miles off the coast of mainland Honduras. The depths of this region provide those who seek to explore it some of the most incredible and rare sitings including the elusive six gill shark, one of the ocean's largest predators! From its highest point near 270m/900ft elevation to the white-sand shores at sea level, the entire island rests atop an exposed ancient coral reef. The Cayman Trench is 25,200 feet (7680 meters) deep at its center; in comparison, the Grand Canyon is less than 6,000 feet (1800 meters) deep. Roatan's fringing coral reef system, which extends directly from the island's shoreline, forms a near-vertical wall for the first 2000 feet (610 meters) down. If the deep water were not so close to shore, the submersible would need a surface support ship for transportation and the operating costs would be prohibitive.
Submarine Expedition:
Beyond the depth of 300 feet (90 meters) plants cease to grow. The animals at these depths have undergone many strange adaptations. Some are blood-red, as red light (the shortest wavelength of light) is completely absorbed in these waters. Others are translucent or shiny like a mirror. Others still make their own light, such as some corals and sponges that glow from their own bioluminescence. Other animals give us a rare glimpse back in time. For example, the sea lilies surviving below 500 feet (150 meters) have remained unchanged in their stable environment for some 230 million years (over half the time that there has been life on the planet). At 1800 feet (550 meters), light fades into perpetual darkness. In this inky abyss where the water temperature hovers only a few degrees above freezing, the truly strange animals take over. Fish are equally likely to stand on their heads or point straight up as they are to swim. Six-gilled sharks with no dorsal fins grow to 20 feet (6 meters). Tripod fish, polka-dotted angler fish, and free-swimming sea cucumbers start to appear. On almost every dive a new animal is encountered, many of which cannot be identified in any books.

Day 1
Roatan Private airport transfer with professional English-speaking driver. Enjoy some leisure time on the Caribbean shores of Roatan, Honduras. Optional activities include; diving, snorkeling, beach exploration, glass bottom boat, sailing, sea kayaking, Gumbalimba National Park, canopy tours, submarine dives, fishing, carambola gardens, iguana farm, horseback riding and more! Activities listed are at an additional cost. Enjoy dinner at leisure (not included in tour price). Palmetto Bay Plantation is a natural island paradise situated on a sparkling bay, surrounded by a coral reef. Reminiscent of traditional Balinese structures with their richly hued hardwoods and louvered-wall ventilation, Palmetto Bay Plantation's eight rental homes sit harmoniously on a palm-ladened beachfront. Return airport transfers are provided complimentary from the hotel. Roatán is a hilly, tropical island, protected by a great coral reef that provides fine diving. 50km (30 miles) off the Caribbean coast of Honduras lies the exotic archipelago of the Bay Islands. Consisting of three major islands (Guanaja, Roatan and Utila) and several smaller islands, the Bay Islands have a history that spans the ancient Mayan civilization, early Spanish exploration, colonial buccaneers and the British Empire.

Day 2
Roatan Enjoy a private transfer from the hotel to the Submarine dock area in Half Moon Bay. A submarine dive into the Cayman Trench, aboard the world's only purpose-built deep water commercial submarine (two passengers, one pilot). A 1.5hr dive explores the second reef wall, which drops between 200- 700 feet (60-210 meters), and around huge field of boulders at its base. At 1000 feet (305 meters) we can often see over 200 feet (60 meters) horizontally using only natural light. Animals encountered include sea lilies, glass sponges, pom-pom anemones, and lace coral. During the 2.5hr dive spend an entire extra hour picking along the boulder fields at the base of the wall. Cat sharks and two types of unusual lobsters are commonly spotted. (Refer to grid above to verify which length dive has been added to your tour). Enjoy a private transfer from the submarine dock to your hotel. Enjoy lunch at leisure (not included in tour price). Enjoy dinner at leisure (not included in tour price). Overnight at Palmetto Bay Plantation.

Day 3
Roatan Enjoy snorkeling with dolphins at Anthony’s Key Resort, where you’ll spend quality time with a dozen or more curiously playful Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins in the warm, gin-clear waters of Roatan. Travel across the resort's lagoon to Bailey’s Key, the private home to a large family of Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins. At a beach-front cabana a brief orientation will be given, and then you'll walk along a white sandy beach to wade waist deep into the water where trained naturalists will give you a 25 minute introduction to a resident dolphin. The trainer will describe the dolphins’ characteristics, and will give you the opportunity to touch, and play with the dolphin. Following the encounter, you’ll snorkel with a maximum of 12 participants for approximately 30 minutes with over a dozen resident dolphins within the enclosure. The snorkel session will provide maximum opportunities for physical contact with the dolphins. If the dolphins choose not to interact, there is a private area for them within the two-acre enclosure. Enjoy lunch at leisure (not included in tour price). Enjoy dinner at leisure (not included in tour price). Overnight at Palmetto Bay Plantation.

Roatan's fringing coral reef system, which extends directly from the island's shoreline, forms a near-vertical wall for the first 2000 feet (610 meters) down. The 3.5hr dive goes into the abyss that is perpetually dark. This region of the ocean covers more than half the planet. The animals here have never known daylight nor season. Many of the creatures date back before the dinosaurs. Fish encountered include jelly-nosed eels, rough sharks, and chimera. The 4hr dive goes past a 110-foot-long shipwreck to a location where the six-gill prehistoric shark is commonly found. Other animals include jelly-nosed eels, rough sharks, and chimera. After a mile of sub-sea travel, arrive at an oasis of deep (1200-1500ft/365-460m) sea coral. Lophelia coral is believed to cover more area than shallow coral reefs; however, since it is found deeper than even technical divers dare venture, few people have ever seen this splendid marine habitat. (Refer to grid above to verify which length dive has been added to your tour).
