Pleiku Pleiku is a town in central Vietnam, located in that nation's central highland region. It is the capital of the Gia Lai Province; it is inhabited primarily by the Bahnar and Jarai ethnic groups, sometimes known as the Montagnards or Degar. The town sits at the junction of several highways - the northern road to Kontum and the highway west to Stœng Trêng in Cambodia. Pleiku is served by Pleiku Airport in the near outskirt of the city. It was strategically important during the Vietnam War because it was the primary terminus of the military supply logistics corridor extending westwards along Highway 19 from the coastal population center and port facilities of Qui Nhon. Additionally, its central location on the plateau, between Kontum in the north, and Ban Me Thuot to the south, and the North Vietnamese Army's base areas in Cambodia to the west made Pleiku the main center of defence of the entire highland region of the Republic of Vietnam. Kontum Kon Tum Province lies in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam and shares borders with Laos and Cambodia. It has an area of 9,934 square km and a population of approximately 330,000. The economy is primarily agricultural. Pleiku was the in the most strategically important position during the Vietnam war. Drive southward on highway No 14 to visit Ham Rong Pass (Dragon Mouth), Lake Labang (former American base) and Camp Enari - the former headquarter of the 4th U.S Infantry Division. Lunch at a local restaurant. Continue to visit Camp Pleime - home to the former U.S Special Forces and enjoy the view overlooking Ladrang Valley. Day 3
Kontum Explore the areas of Dakto battlefield (1967) including the former airbase and the Charlie Hill, Phuong Hoang airfield (Phoenix Airfield), and Dakto museum. Return to town for lunch and visit the suspension bridge, and the old wooden church along with several hill tribe villages.
