Day 2 South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park in eastern Zambia, the southernmost of three national parks in the valley of the Luangwa River, is a world-renowned wildlife haven. It supports large populations of Thorneycroft's Giraffe, and herds of elephant and buffalo often several hundred strong, while the Luangwa River supports abundant crocodiles and hippopotamuses. It is one of the best-known national parks in Africa for walking safaris. Founded as a game reserve in 1938, it became a national park in 1972 and now covers 9,050 km².

Travel today between Johannesburg and Lusaka.  Flights are approximately 2 hours and depart daily starting at 6:30am.

Luggage restricted to 12 kg per person in soft sided bags.  Travel time is approximately 1 and a half hours.

After lunch, head out on an afternoon game drive that continues into the early night giving you the chance to see the nocturnal world within the park.

This hilltop lodge with just ten suites is found in Zambia's vast South Luangwa National Park. Home to probably the highest concentration of hippos in the world, as well as lions, leopards and elephants. South Luangwa is famous for its walking safaris. The roar of lions or the saw of leopards can often be heard from the wooded valleys that surround the lodge.

Day 3 South Luangwa National Park

Walking is the best way to see the bush. Your experienced guides love showing you the indicators of the wild, ‘rewinding’ the action of the last few hours from just a few small give away signs. See where an elephant stopped to browse, where a leopard scratched a tree or a pangolin rolled into a ball. Accompanied by an armed game scout and taking careful note of the wind to mask any scent. There’s nothing like seeing lion tracks or the giant footprint of an elephant to make guests relish the comforts of camp. The area is home to 60 mammals and over 400 bird species, making it one of the top birding destinations in the world.

After lunch, head out on an afternoon game drive that continues into the early night giving you the chance to see the nocturnal world within the park.

Day 4 South Luangwa National Park

The South Luangwa National Park is known as the home of the walking safari and all camps offer walks. Walking through big game country is a truly exciting experience and as South Luangwa led the way for guide training and licensing in Zambia the standard of guiding here is superb. Taking a scout with you, you will be able to enjoy a walk or explore further afield in the park. Enjoy a box lunch under a tree or next to a lagoon, take a siesta, or simply spend a lazy couple of hours reading a book with the fascinating animals and landscape all around you.

Day 5 South Luangwa National Park

Pick up by 4X4 from Puku Ridge and will transfer to Zebra Plains Camp. Transfer time is approximately 3 hours.  We suggest guests begin a walking safari with a stay at Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp or Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge before departing.

The terrain around camp is ideal for exploring with plenty of shade and long sweeping views. Garth Hovell, a well-respected safari guide with almost twenty years of experience, will lead walks twice a day. You will also be accompanied by a tea bearer and armed ZAWA scout. One morning you might wander along a river bank, observing elephants before canoeing across to an island across from camp to get up close to plains game. Later that day you may choose to explore nearby Zebra Plains where zebra, buffalo and eland gather in large herds on the open savanna in the wooded terrain. Your next stop might be the Changwa Channel, home to one of the highest hippo concentrations on earth.

Zebra Plains is perched on a sand bank at the confluence of the Luangwa and Chibembe Rivers. The unspoilt bush around camp is home to large populations of zebra, elephant, buffalo, crocodile and puku, as well as various endemic species and over 400 bird species. The diversity of habitats here provide from some of the most spectacular walking in Africa over terrain that is ideal for exploring with plenty of shade and long sweeping views.

Day 6 South Luangwa National Park

Get ready for another day of wildlife exploration in and around your camp The “dry” season is from May to November and is the easiest time to travel. June to August are the coolest months, with cold mornings and evenings. October is the hottest month in Zambia, so be prepared for temperatures of over 40°C. Clothing should be cool and comfortable. Jerseys and fleeces are required for winter mornings and evenings. Muted colours are the most suitable on a walking safari. It is advisable to wear long sleeves and long trousers due to mosquitoes as well as long grass. Sturdy and comfortable shoes are essential. A fully complimentary laundry service is offered daily. Laundry will be hand washed and coal ironed. Game viewing at South Luangwa is considered to be some of the best in the world. It is a notably good place to see leopards, particularly in the dry season when they have less cover in which to hide. Out in the bush with an armed game scout and a guide, you can follow animal tracks along sandy paths. It’s not just the big animals that are fascinating – termites, dung beetles and chameleons all have their stories to tell too.

You will see that the concentration of wildlife in the area is simply awe-inspiring - zebra, antelope, buffalo and puku congregate on the plains alongside endemic species such as the Thornicroft's giraffe, Cookson’s wildebeest and unique Crawshay's zebra. Predators here include lion, leopard and the elusive wild dog whilst the rivers and tributaries are teeming with hippo, elephant and crocodile. There are also over 400 species of birds.
